Carved in the highlands of Sumba, Sundra Duka is a quiet, haunting sculpture by Ladu Umbu Rara, a reclusive artist shaped by the island’s deep-rooted Marapu traditions.

Ladu learned to carve by studying ancient ancestor statues, turning grief into form. He speaks little, letting his pieces carry what he cannot. Sundra Duka, meaning “gentle sorrow,” reflects a season of mourning, each cut in the wood a quiet release of memory and pain.

It is not meant to comfort, but to witness.
